Bai Kabibai & Hansraj Morarji Charity Trust
Established: 20 March 1926
By: Bai Kabibai & Seth Hansraj Morarji
The Bai Kabibai and Hansraj Morarji Charity Trust carries a rich legacy of philanthropy, vision, and nation-building. In the mid-1920s, renowned businessman and philanthropist Seth Hansraj Morarji, along with his noble wife Bai Kabibai, took the extraordinary decision to donate their entire wealth for the cause of education and public good. This selfless act gave birth to the Bai Kabibai & Hansraj Morarji Charity Trust in 1926.
From its very inception, the Trust was closely associated with India’s freedom struggle and national leaders. One of the founding trustees was Shri K.M. Munshi, a freedom fighter, statesman, and visionary educationist. With a dream to establish a public school offering quality education to Indian children, he laid the foundation of Hansraj Morarji Public School in June 1939. It began as a residential school in three bungalows off Ghod Bundar Road with about 50 students.
In 1938, Dr. Munshi acquired a large tract of land in Andheri, Mumbai. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel laid the foundation stone for the hostel building on 28 January 1940. Despite the challenges posed by World War II—including multiple relocations to Vadtal in Gujarat and Worli in Bombay—the school finally moved back to its permanent Andheri campus in 1946. The new school building was inaugurated by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on 19 August 1962, after its ceremonial Khat-Muhurat performed by Dr. Munshi.
In the formative years, the school was honored by the presence of eminent national figures such as Shri C. Rajagopalachari, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, Shri Jayaprakash Narayan, and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, who engaged with students and inspired generations.
Originally, the school followed Gujarati as the medium of instruction, in accordance with Bombay Government policy. Later, English was introduced following a Supreme Court verdict. In 1953, due to declining demand for residential schooling, the school began admitting day scholars, and by 1957 it had become a full-fledged member of the Indian Public School Conference.
